Ground
Los Angeles is full of the most interesting, hard-working unemployed people anywhere. I don’t understand how they are so unfazed by constant uncertainty over jobs and their career paths. It’s intimidating to see just how well they deal with it, refusing to leave Los Angeles despite struggling for years, and yet I lose my mind and turn into this listless drag after two weeks of waiting to start an...

An embarrassing streak of cynicism
Psychology was my least favorite subject in high school. I wasn’t bad at it – in fact I aced every test that I took, but ultimately failed the course because I hadn’t kept a “Dream Journal” that amounted to something like 35% of my final grade. Rather than scramble to compile the journal on the night before it was due (as many students opted to do), I chose to spare myself the dreadful task of...
Mom
When my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, I was home from school in Texas and she had just moved to Colorado. She told me the news over the phone, trying to maintain the stoic reserve so typical of my immediate family when having to deal with crisis but finally breaking down in tears just before saying goodbye. I am only now beginning to realize that it wasn’t the physical hundreds of miles...

I have been taking my shirt off in a not-sexy way...
You’re supposed to pull it over your back and then simply slide it off your arms, not pull your arms into it and then take it off from the inside.

Fighting in ice hockey →
My rationalization for fighting in ice hockey has always been that none of the players realize the implications of bolting around on ice skates within a confined space, so inevitable high-speed collisions always end up in fisticuffs. This Wikipedia page offers more convoluted explanations (like so-called “blue lines” that keep puck handlers in close proximity) that I think all...

Re: Domino's new pizza
How come everybody is suddenly a pizza aficionado when they want to bad-mouth Domino’s? Isn’t it a bit like complaining that one company’s donuts suck shit compared to another company’s donuts? They’re donuts. I’m not going to get on some panel and complain that the frosting on Dunkin’ Donuts’ donuts tastes like the wax paper they wrap them in...
I still can’t understand why so many people plunk down the dough for a concert ticket only to stand there taking pictures on their camera phone the whole time.
Especially at a Camper Van Beethoven show.

Via BoingBoing: An Italian singer wrote a song with gibberish lyrics meant to sound like English. Note: it is the best song in the world.
Tonight, when my cab driver found out I was neither married nor with girlfriend, he said I was bly. According to Urban Dictionary, bly is a Rastafarian word meaning “to get a favor or chance.” Fair enough, cab driver — I am pretty bly.

One of my favorite quotes ever, I realized yesterday.
OK full disclosure: I’m not really slaving away at anything at the moment—but LATER!!
I hope everyone is having a grand old time hooking up with hometown flames while I slave away in the kitchen. No rest as long as there are still minds un-blown.
I’m having Thanksgiving at a friend’s place tomorrow and I’m half sure I’m gonna spend most of the day lost and trying to figure out Boston’s commuter rail system. Even so, it should be nice getting out some.
